KIDS — on the farm!

We love springtime!  The trees start budding, flowers blooming, and farm babies are born!!  Yep — this spring we’ve got lots and lots of KIDS running around here at Cagle’s Family Farm!  KIDS  – aka Baby Goats.  These lil’ guys and gals are very playful with each other, running and jumping all over the place.  They’re a sight to see!  These youngins’ can been seen on the Spring Field Trips as well as on the Ag-Venture Tours.

History — who cares about that?

Well … we do.  We chose to learn from and preserve the history our family, and their farming in Georgia.  Farming has evolved from what it once was.  Many innovations, new techniques, equipment, processes etc. have changed the way we, at Cagle’s Family Farm in Canton, Ga, farm today.

Our ancestors used to plow with mules and donkeys, and today, we have tractors with comfy seats and radios.  Now, that’s not saying farming is a piece of cake.  It’s not.  There is still a lot of hard work, sweat and tears put into our family farm.  But we have built a ‘Farm History Center’ in our former dairy barn.  Once inside,  visitors will get to see a little about how farming has changed over the years.

We invite school groups, in particular elementary-aged students, to come on a Spring Field Trip and enjoy hands-on farming.  A visit with our baby goats, calves and other farm animals are always a treat.  For more information on the educational field trips, read on…

Oak, our loyal farm dog and friend.

Back last fall, our loyal farm dog and friend, Oak, had an injury and suffered a broken leg.  He had to take some time off from working here on the farm, while wearing a full leg cast.  But he enjoyed being spoiled.  He had his cast removed in January, and we are slowly working him back into training.  Our goal is to have Oak back to full heath in-time for our Spring Ag-Venture tours!

We’re sure he will be ready to put on a show after his lazy winter recuperating!  Won’t you join us and let Oak show you how he works here at Cagle’s Family Farm in Canton, Ga!

Is your old artificial tree looking a lil’ flat and worn out?  Or are you wanting fresh decorations this holiday season?  A fresh Fraser Fir Christmas Tree will brighten the season for sure!  Come see me here at Cagle’s Family Farm, where we will have pre-cut Fraser Fir trees, fresh greenery and all the trimmings for you this season.  We welcome you to bring the whole family and stay awhile to sip hot chocolate around our bonfire.  Then you can head home for all the fun decorating your REAL Christmas tree!

2011 Cagle’s Family Farm Photo Contest

Entries must be received by November 13, 2011. Winners will be announced by November 26, 2011.

For photos & short video clips videos, simply upload the file to our Flickr Photostream.  Here’s How-To instructions:

1. Click here  to submit photos via email.
2. Attach your favorite 3 photos or video clips.
3. In the subject link write ‘Contest entry by (your name)’
4. Remove any email signature or text within the email message.
5. Then send the email.

By submitting your photos/videos in the contest, you agree to the following Contest Rules.

1. The contest is open to amateur photographers only. Photographers must be at least 18 yrs of age or have written permission of parent or guardian to enter contest.
2. Photos must be taken at Cagle’s Family Farm during the 2011 Fall Season.
3. A panel of judges will select the top photo based on relevance to Cagle’s Family Farm, originality and quality of the photos. Fall season winner will be announced by November 26, 2011 on our website.
4. Cagle’s Family Farm will display the top winners on their website and Facebook following the 2011 Fall Season.  Photo entries may also be shown prior.
5. No more than three (3) entries per person.

Christmas times a-comin’!

It will be here before we know it!  Christmas time at Cagle’s Family Farm is a special time, for everyone here on the farm as well as our guests.  Come and join us!

We’ll have beautiful Frasier Fir Christmas trees, ranging from 5 ft – 15 feet in height, fresh greenery and all the trimmings!  After you pick your perfect tree, you can warm up around the bonfire, sip hot apple cider or hot chocolate before heading home and decorating.

Decorate this pumpkin scarecrow with a flock of artificial ravens for an eerie Halloween yard display.  We’ve got the pumpkins here at Cagle’s Family Farm!

 

• Pumpkin (approximately the size of a human head)
• Marker or pen (to transfer pattern)
• Knife or carving tools
• Shirt
• Overalls
• Straw
• PVC Pipe
• Heavy-duty wire
• Artificial birds
• Battery-operated candle

How to Make It 

1. Download the free pattern and transfer it onto a pumpkin that has been cleaned out. Note: You should cut the access hole on the bottom of the pumpkin — roughly the same size as the PVC pipe that you will be inserting later. Using a knife or carving tools, cut out the openings.
2. Stuff a shirt and overalls with straw to make a scarecrow body. Cut a 3- to 4-inch PVC pipe long enough to fit through the torso of the body and up into the pumpkin. Slide the “head” onto the pipe through the hole in the bottom of the pumpkin.
3. Wire the pipe to the back of a bench or chair where the scarecrow will be seated to secure the display.
4. Wire artificial birds to the scarecrow, pumpkin, and bench. Pose the birds as desired.
5. Use a battery-operated candle to illuminate the pumpkin. (A lighted candle could become a fire hazard.)

HUGS FROM THE FARM will be here at Cagle’s Family Farm Sunday, Oct. 16th!

In effort to show support to those men and women serving in the armed forces currently, we are collecting items for soldier care packages.  There is a wide variety of items that are needed and very much appreciated by the military personell, and we are greateful to all of our wonderful farm-goers who will be bringing such items to the farm this fall. 

By donating care package items that are on this list, visitors to Cagle’s Family Farm during the fall 2011 season will receive a special discount, $2 off farm admission (not to be combined with any other offer), just for bringing an item for this worthy cause.  Care package items will be collected at the farm throughout the fall season.

We also will have a letter writing station at the farm so you can bring a letter, or write one while here at the farm for a deployed soldier.  This is a wonderful way to get the whole family involved in supporting our men and women who so bravely serve our conutry and protect our freedoms every day.
